Caffeine is commonly understood to be a diuretic (expels water from the body). But how much caffeine do you need to consume to experience the effects of dehydration?

It seems that scientific consensus is that 500mg of caffeine is the threshold for the beginnings of dehydration. To give you an idea, an 8oz cup of coffee has about 150mg of caffeine on the higher end. You would have to consume at least 3 cups of coffee before your coffee could be regarded as an agent of dehydration.

So in theory, if you have too much coffee, then it can certainly dehydrate you. However, if you enjoy coffee within the boundaries of moderation, you don’t need to worry about being dehydrated.

Additionally, a good rule of thumb when seeking hydration is to drink only water. If you’re drinking your coffee with cream and sugar, this information could also likely change. It is never a good idea to expect hydration from a drink that is full of sugar.

Is Coffee a diuretic

Coffee can be a diuretic. If it is consumed in excess (more than three 8oz cups) then you certainly can experience diruetic effects from coffee. The best way to hydrate is always with a nice glass of water.

Does coffee raise blood pressure

Yes. Coffee raising blood pressure (BP) is a very well documented phenomenon. BP usually spikes 5-10 points within about 30 minutes of drinking coffee and the physiology behind why this happens isn’t well understood.

If you’re worried about coffee’s effect on your blood pressure of if you suffer from high blood pressure, consider seeking help from a dietician or other diet-focused health professional.

How many calories in a cup of coffee

Close to zero. A Calorie is a measure of energy which corresponds to the different groups of macronutrients: 1 gram of carbohydrate or protein has 4 calories, 1 gram of fat has 9 calories, and 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories. Coffee contains no alcohol and has trace amounts of carbohydrate, protein, and fat which come from the coffee bean (a fruit). An 8oz cup of coffee likely has less than 4 calories.

However, this only applies to black coffee. If you add sugar and milk then your coffee could have several hundred calories depending on how much you add.

Does Coffee Make You Gain Weight?

Black coffee will not make you gain weight. In fact black coffee has properties which suppress appetite and it could even help you stave off cravings or take the place of an afternoon snack without the sugary crash afterwards.

If you drink coffee with heaps of cream, sugar, syrup and whipped cream, then it can certainly be a vehicle for weight gain. A good rule of thumb whenever eating or drinking anything is if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, it shouldn’t be going in your body.

Does Coffee Help Hangovers?

The physiology of a hangover is not particularly well understood, and it depends on what part of the hangover you want to fix. If you need to get up and get to work, then the best thing is probably a nice hot mug of coffee and a greasy breakfast from your favorite fast-food restaurant.

However if you have the luxury of sleeping as long as you want, you might want to hold off on the coffee; just drink a glass of water and go back to sleep for a few hours. If you drink coffee, there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to go back to sleep.

Can I drink coffee while fasting?

It depends on why you’re fasting. If you are fasting for religious reasons, then you should check with your spiritual leader.

If you are fasting for health reasons, then the answer is yes, you can certainly drink coffee while you’re fasting. The theory behind fasting practices (such as intermittent fasting) is to give your body a break from digestion. Coffee doesn’t contain any compound that would require a robust digestion response from your gut and actually has appetite suppressive characteristics which may help you make it a few hours farther into your fast.

If you do decide to consume coffee while fasting, just make sure that you are not adding any sugar (especially zero calorie sugar), creams, or syrups. As the great Edgar Allen Poe said, “once you go black, you never go back.”

Can you be allergic to Coffee?

Coffee allergies are exceedingly rare, but with the advent of GMOs, mono-crop agriculture, high-process food practices, and the ubiquitous use of pesticides and fungicides, the answer is: maybe.

Prior to the industrial revolution, allergies to peanuts, wheat, and other substances were virtually unheard of. It is very possible that coffee allergies start to appear as we wade deeper into our current unhealthy relationship with food.

The best way to figure out if you’re allergic to coffee is to stop drinking it for 3-4 weeks and then re-introduce it. If you feel bad when you re-introduce coffee into your diet, then there’s a chance you’re allergic or at least intolerant to coffee and should abstain from drinking it.

Apart from the actual coffee bean, you could be experiencing a reaction to mold that is present on some coffee. These molds may be able to survive the temperature of a coffee roaster which can get north of 400ºF. The best way to avoid these molds is to purchase high-quality coffee. The dirty little secret of the commercial coffee industry (most coffee that’s sold in supermarkets) is that it’s a relatively dirty and unhealthy product. Underripe, overripe, moldy, and rotten beans are mixed together and then roasted/burnt to mask any gross flavors. By the time that you brew it, coffee mostly has a characteristically stale and nearly burnt flavor which almost necessitates the use of cream and sugar. High-quality specialty coffee like the kind that Cielo sells does not have mold on it and our coffee farmers use minimal pesticides and fertilizers. Our clients have told us before that coffee gives them acid reflux but Cielo doesn’t.

Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure that you’re drinking coffee only black. If you believe you have a reaction after drinking coffee, you could be allergic to milk or sugar—both allergies are way more common than coffee allergies.
